Fox NFL Sunday studio analyst and Hall of Fame head coach Jimmy Johnson has announced he is retiring from broadcasting after 31 years.
Johnson, 81, made his decision public Monday on “The Herd With Colin Cowherd," saying, “The most fun I ever had in my career, that’s counting Super Bowls and national championships, was at Fox Sports. ... I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years and I’ve decided to retire from Fox. I’m going to miss it. I’m going to miss all the guys. I’ll see them occasionally. It’s been a great run ...”
Johnson joined the network as a contributor after leaving the Cowboys in 1994, then became a full-time analyst when his subsequent tenure with the Dolphins ended in 1999. Johnson was good for a long while, but he's been struggling to get words in on a boisterous cast that includes Terry Bradshaw, Michael Strahan and Howie Long. The youth movement is afoot on that show anyway. Rob Gronkowski was added in 2022, and Bradshaw already announced he will retire when his current contract with Fox expires.
Hard to imagine Johnson out of football after 64 years as a player, coach or analyst. Best to him.
