The Yankees have designated D.J. LeMahieu for assignment, 45 games into his seventh season with the club. This essentially ends his tenure with the Yankees and makes LeMahieu a free agent should the team be unable to trade him. If a team claims him once he hits waivers, it will have to assume the remainder of his $15 million salary this year and assume the last year of his contract next year at the same rate.
LeMahieu, 36, who was twice asilver slugger for the Yankees (2019 and 2020) and won the first-ever Gold Glove for utility players in 2022. However, he's had a steady decline in OPS follwoing the COVID-shortened 2020 season and is slashing just .266/.338/..336, with a below-average OPS+ of 91.
Manager Aaron Boone said the DFA came Wednesday after the team informed LeMahieu they were moving him to a bench role. He requested a release and the team obliged.
LeMahieu would be a nice bench addition for a playoff team, but if he thinks he's going to get an everyday job somewhere else, barring a player injury, he's delusional.
