It was captain Danny Griffin who was on media duty tonight after the game. Obviously there was a lot of deflation in his voice after the team dropped points in the way that they did as he talked through the late goal and the impact the two points will have, whilst also taking some time to praise teammate Robbie Mertz for his part not just tonight, but across the season as a whole:
On the equalizer: “As the game went on, maybe we didn’t stay on top of them they way we did early on in the second half. The ball got played through the middle, the deflection and the pass, Eric (Dick) was great with some of the saves he made, so it was unlucky, he almost made the save.
“Obviously, for us we’re all disappointed, because we know at home how important it is to get the three points, especially knowing where they are in the standings and where we are. It was certainly a winnable game and every time we’re at home we want three points.”
On what dropping two points will mean: “You look at every match and you look at the head to head, obviously, when we went there prior they got the win. So we look at it from that standpoint, but it’s such a long season and they’re six points ahead of us in the table, there are so many more games that we can’t let any points slip. That’s our mentality going into every game.”
On Mertz and his play: “Robbie’s in great form, it’s great that he’s finding the back of the net for us. His willingness to run in behind, battle, come back and press certainly helps me and Jackson (Walti) a lot.
“When I saw him making that run in behind it was a no-brainer. He did well to cut back on his defender, get a shot off, it came back and quickly with his reaction put it in the back of the net, so I’m happy for him to get the goal.
