The Steelers have signed Omar Khan to a new three-year contract, keeping him as the team's general manager through the 2028 season.
"I am excited to announce we have signed Omar to a new three-year contract," Art Rooney II said in a press release. "Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL Draft, strategic trades, and free agency. We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field."
Khan, who is in his 25th season with the Steelers, took over for long-time GM Kevin Colbert following the 2022 NFL Draft.
"I would like to thank Art Rooney II for his support," Khan said in a press release. "I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the City of Pittsburgh and our great fans."
Khan has made his own stamp on the job since taking over, highlighted by aggressive moves such as signing top-tier free agents and trading for big-name players such as DK Metcalf and Jalen Ramsey. Not having a franchise quarterback to pay for makes all of this much easier given the abundance of cap space. Nevertheless, Khan has done everything to maximize both the cap and the team's total assets.
The next year for Khan, however, is very important. The team is in the middle of negotiations with T.J. Watt, who may end up receiving the largest average annual value for a non-quarterback. How that plays out, for both the player and the team, is very important. This is the greatest pass rusher in the franchise's history, but the cap needs to remain as flexible as possible for the future.
That's another part of why this next year is a crucial one for Khan. Next year's NFL Draft is projected to have a much stronger crop of quarterbacks. With the Steelers projected to have as many as 12 picks next year, the team as all the capital it needs to be aggressive and go get their quarterback of the future.
It's important to Khan to get away from one-year fixes and draft the next potential franchise quarterback that can lead the franchise to compete for Super Bowls year in and year out. That wasn't going to happen this year, which is why the team settled for signing Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal. However, it's in Khan's vision to draft a long-term solution at quarterback very soon.
The Steelers will have a hard time competing for any Lombardi Trophies until they draft their next quarterback. The fact that Rooney signed Khan to this extension ahead of these moves shows the trust he has in him to get this done.
