As we do every Sunday, we’ll feature some notes from BenCherington's weekly radio show here:
• Cherington reiterated that he thought DerekShelton was the man for the job prior to their August collapse last year. After the poor start to this season, a change was necessary.
• Cherington said DonKelly is "absolutely the right person" to manage this team at this time.
"He literally walks into this ballpark every day thinking about everybody but himself. ... This is personal for him. This place matters to him, this team matters to him."
• Cherington said they're working through staff adjustments as quickly as they can. There is currently no bench coach taking over for Kelly. Expects changes during the upcoming road trip.
"We want to get it right. We want to do the right thing for him, the right thing for the team."
• Cherington on the possibility of a turnaround: "I believe we're going to play better baseball in 2025. None of us have our heads in the sand, we know we've dug ourselves a hole. There are a variety of reasons for that. I don't think you have to squint too hard to see a good, effective, deep pitching staff in 2025, I don't think you have to squint too hard to see that. Our team defense has been generally good all year, don't have a reason to think that can't continue, the run scoring has been challenged and there are sort of natural reasons that that should improve some. You have players performing way under their expectation, you have players who are hurt who should come back, help us and make us deeper, and that's certainly an area we need to continue to strengthen as an organization. That's on me and baseball operations. I believe there are clearly reasons to believe we are going to have a better team on the field in 2025. You also can't win five games today. It doesn't work that way. We've got to do the work necessary to make it better. That includes everybody, it certainly includes me, everybody in the clubhouse and everybody in the organization. You've got to fight one pitch at a time. We've done that the last two days against the Braves. There are also these things that happen during a game, including yesterday's game that remind us, 'OK, we can be a little bit stronger there and we can be stronger there in 2025.' We know that. That's how I feel. There's nothing happening other than work toward that, let's get better in 2025."
• Offensively, Cherington said there are a bunch of players underperforming their preseason projections and what the expected numbers would be.
"Some of that should work itself out. History tells us that some of that works itself out, so that has to be part of it getting better."
• Cherington said the organization has to be better at finding and developing position players. He also said he's "really confident" in the people responsible for doing that.
"I really believe in what we're doing in terms of selection in the draft and international and with our hitting development group. We've made changes in all those areas in the last 12 to 24 months and really believe in the work that group is doing. It takes time. That work is not going to turn into results the next day. Really believe we will over time."
• Cherington said SpencerHorwitz is reaching the 20-day mark in his rehab stint. That will happen on this upcoming road trip. A decision will have to be made soon, but Horwitz hasn't run into any setbacks during his rehab.
• Cherington touched on Horwitz's offensive track record, saying he was very strong in the minor leagues and had a good chunk of offensive performance with the Blue Jays the last couple of years. Cherington said he's a good at-bat, sees pitches, takes walks, has doubles power, sneaky home run power and he's going to grind out at-bats.
• DauriMoreta hasn't suffered any setbacks in recovery from Tommy John surgery. He's currently rehabbing at Class AAA Indianapolis and his stuff and velocity is back to where he was before the injury, Cherington said.
• NickGonzales is still taking part in baserunning activities, particularly making turns on the basepaths. Cherington expects he's not far away from that start to the rehab assignment. Gonzales told me last week he could have been heading to Indianapolis as soon as today.
• Cherington said it "could be a while" for EnmanuelValdez, who is dealing with a shoulder issue. He has a second opinion coming.
• Isiah Kiner-Falefa should be back "any day now," Cherington said. A rehab stint isn't expected.
• Cherington said NickSolak's name has come up a lot considering a possible call up from Class AAA Indianapolis, as he's performed well there and has major-league experience. Said it comes down to roster fit. If he was a left-handed hitting first baseman, he might already be up in the big leagues, Cherington said.
