The last time Mike Burrows faced the Diamondbacks on May 27, he lasted 3 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs. Tonight, Burrows started the game throwing three straight balls to Corbin Carroll, then threw 31 of his next 36 pitches for strikes over his first three innings.
He would take that momentum and toss a career-high six scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 4.15 but took a no-decision in the Pirates' loss against the Diamondbacks at PNC Park.
"He did a nice job again. Started off 3-0 and was able to slow down and get back in the zone and start to attack the zone," Don Kelly said. "Everything was working. Changeup was really good. Breaking ball I thought was really good too and was able to command the fastball like we talked about which is a huge key for him."
Since Burrows' June 4 start against the Astros, he's pitched 43 2/3 innings, allowing 16 earned runs for a 3.30 ERA and 43 strikeouts.
"Just executing the fastball," Burrows said of a fastball that generated three whiffs and 10 called strikes, which set up his other pitches, especially his changeup that had four whiffs on 22 pitches.
