After Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller took their turns with live batting practice earlier this week, Monday was Jared Jones' turn and Derek Shelton shared afterward that Jones is working on a two-seamer to add to his arsenal.
Jones came into spring training last year and impressed enough to make the opening day roster and now, with a roster spot locked up, Shelton said Jones has settled in a little more which has allowed him to work on the pitches that he has at his disposal.
"He's probably a little bit more comfortable. Last year he came into camp with the anxiety of trying to make the club and where he was at and finding his footing," Shelton said. "Now it's a situation where he's working on his repertoire, adding the two-seamer, being able to use pitches. But it's encouraging to see how the ball came out of his hand today."
As a rookie last season, Jones leaned heavily on a fastball and slider combination that he threw 49.3% and 34.8% of the time, according to Baseball Savant. He also mixed in a curveball and changeup but used both less than 10% of the time. Now he's working on a two-seamer and this is the perfect time to do it.
With live batting practices taking place, Jones has the opportunity to talk with his teammates to see how his pitches are moving and what they look like from a batter's perspective.
"The great thing about BP with your own group is you get feedback. You get feedback from our hitters, because they're sitting there," Shelton said. "They've seen you, they know you, they've played behind you. They're going to give you the most honest feedback. It's not like we're going to get into a game against Baltimore and you're going to ask Gunnar Henderson, 'Hey, how does the two-seamer play?' In situations like this, we need to make sure that he's getting feedback. Not only from the metrics but from what he's feeling and also our hitters."
