For as good as the Dodgers lineup is with three former MVPs at the top of it in Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani, they have hitters all the way through, and Andy Pages is one of them.
The 24-year-old outfielder caught fire this weekend, as he finished the three-game set going 10-for-12 with three doubles, a home run and four RBIs. He was one of just two hitters to tally two or more hits off Paul Skenes on Friday and tallied all four of his RBIs today in the Dodgers' 9-2win.
Pages reached base in four of his five at-bats with his lone pop out coming in the eighth inning when he swung at a first-pitch sweeper from Chase Shugart. The only other time he didn't reach base came in yesterday's game when Mitch Keller got him to pop-up on a fastball up in the zone.
"He did not miss anything. I think maybe the worst pitch we threw him in the whole series was the one that (Shugart) just threw him at the end," Derek Shelton said. "It was kind of a hanging slider, and he popped it straight up. Sometimes guys get in a tree and he's in a tree right now, and he had really good swings. It's one of those things where everything we threw at him, he hit."
Over his last seven games, Pages is hitting .500/.500/.962 with three home runs and three RBIs and hasn't walked once while striking out just three times in 26 at-bats. He's also hitting .377/.411/.717 over his last 15 games.
"When you're hot, you're hot," Bailey Falter would say about Pages, who tallied two singles and an RBI off him today.
• Adam Frazier has now hit safely in 11 straight games and is hitting .381/.500/.429 over his last seven games. He was one of the Pirates' best contact hitters on this six-game road trip, hitting .412/.545/.412 with a .957 OPS and five walks.
• With Tyler Glasnow's early exit due to right shoulder discomfort, the Pirates faced five different pitchers today and struck out a combined 12 times. Ben Casparius, who relieved Glasnow, struck out five batters and Yoendrys Gómez tallied four. Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, Joey Bart and Tommy Pham each struck out two or more times. The Pirates' 258 strikeouts is currently the fifth-highest total in Major League Baseball.
• As part of his struggles today, Falter said his breaking stuff was not very good. He was hit hard in general as three of his pitches had max exit velocities of 100 mph or more. Ohtani smoked a sinker for a double in the second inning that had an exit velocity of 113.2.
• One thing to watch as the Pirates head home is Cruz's stolen-base streak. He's stolen 32 consecutive bases, last being caught on April 22, 2024. He's tied with Tony Womack for the longest streak by a Pirates players since 1951, when caught stealing was first officially tracked in the National League. It's the longest active streak in all of Major League Baseball.
