Dennis Santana has been activated off the bereavement list and Kyle Nicolas has been optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis as the corresponding move.
Santana was placed on the bereavement list on April 29 with an effective date of April 28 and has been back at PNC Park since Friday. He's appeared in 13 games and has thrown 12 1/3 innings while producing a 1.46 ERA. He's tallied seven strikeouts, has converted all three of his save opportunities along with four holds and three walks.
Nicolas has made seven appearances since being recalled to the Pirates on April 11. He produced a 10.57 ERA in 7 2/3 innings. He gave up 10 hits, eight walks and struck out six. He produced three scoreless innings at the major-league level and ultimately produced his best outing against the Angels on April 24 when he threw two innings, didn't allow a hit and struck out three in the Pirates' 4-3 loss.
