Art Rooney II has released the following statement on the death of Tiffany Saine, Derrick Harmon’s mother:
STEELERS
According to Harmon, Saine had to have about eight different brain surgeries while he was growing up. While he was a freshman at Michigan State, she suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed on her left side. After having to make the very tough decision to transfer to Oregon, she was his inspiration to make it worth the pain of moving more than 2,000 miles away.
Saine was his biggest fan, supported him in every decision and her perseverance through health issues motivated Harmon to become the player and person he is now. She couldn't be by his side as he got drafted, as she was in the hospital on life support.
"It was a little bittersweet -- my mom wasn't with me," Harmon said last night about getting drafted. "She's at the hospital right now on life support, so that was a little bittersweet man, because she worked as hard, just for me to get to this moment, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So, like I said, I'm very excited."
Harmon did have the chance to go see her before she ultimately passed away last night.
Also got word that Harmon isn’t addressing the media today. Completely understandable. As soon as I hear when he may end up holding his introductory press conference, I’ll let everyone know.
